What Does a Quartz Plate Do?
The quartz plate is typically positioned between the UV curing lamp and the substrate. Although simple in appearance, it performs several important functions:
- Helps isolate the UV lamp and control cooling airflow
- Keeps cooling air away from sensitive inkjet printheads and the printed substrate
- Protects the UV lamp from ink mist, contamination, and debris
- Helps maintain the proper operating temperature of the UV lamp
- Provides a protective barrier between the lamp assembly and printing area
- Can help reduce substrate temperature when an infrared-reflective coating is applied
Specialty quartz plates are available with vacuum-deposited infrared coatings designed to transmit UV energy while reflecting a portion of the infrared heat.
TECH TIP — Keep Your Quartz Plate Clean
For optimum UV curing performance, the quartz plate should be kept clean and free of ink, dust, fingerprints, and other contamination.
Over time, quartz can naturally solarize, reducing its transmission of UV energy. A plate may still appear usable while transmitting less UV energy to the substrate, resulting in reduced curing performance.
For this reason, inspection and periodic replacement of the quartz plate should be part of a regular UV system maintenance program.
Quartz Quality Matters
Not all quartz is the same.
The purity and quality of the quartz can affect UV transmission and long-term performance. TCS Technologies uses USA-sourced quartz materials selected for dependable UV transmission and consistent performance
Lower-quality quartz containing higher levels of impurities may reduce UV transmission and can prove to be a poor value over its service life.
