∇ Tech tip

To produce the required diazo spectral output, lamp is dosed with small amount of gallium triiodide (GaI3). When cold, GaI3 casts a yellow film on bulb’s inner surface. Once lit the yellow film boils off entering vapor stage of the arc. This is not indicative of a defective or used lamp rather it is the means by which proper UV output is generated.
